How to write better copy

Want to make your website copy sing, but you don’t know how?

Writing is a skill, sure, but if you are trying to DIY your website copy, then here are 10 helpful tips to make your copy sound as schmik, as polished and as enticing as possible:

Tip No. 1: Don’t be vague:

Keep it crystal clear and simple, and for the love of all things readable make sure it makes sense at all times. Please. And thank you.

Tip No. 2: Talk about what makes you so awesome:

Focus on your value proposition, why your clients or customers should work with you. Talk about your value in a way that benefits them. When they see what they will get out of it, they will want it.

Tip No. 3: Don’t ignore Vanessa:

Tailor your unique messaging so it resonates with your ideal target client, who, in my case has been nicknamed Vanessa. So if Vanessa wants to make more money and have greater freedom to spend time with her young and growing family, then make sure you talk about how much time your product or service will give her if she buys from you. Don’t tailor your messaging to Bob, the single 65 year old in the CBD who is a workaholic and a lover of dogs. It just won’t pack the same punch. Sorry.

Tip No. 4: Don’t overwhelm her wth content:

Keep it short, sharp and snappy. Too many words will mean that Vanessa will be overwhelmed (or asleep) before even getting to funnel deeper into your website. #I’mClickinOutThanks

Tip No. 5: Don’t neglect your SEO:

Have you invested time and money into researching SEO keywords? Awesome! Don’t forget to incorporate the relevant keywords into your copy (in all the right places) to improve search engine visibility. That way if Vanessa googles your goodies (don’t be a creep), then she has a chance of actually finding you.

Tip No. 6: Don’t forget a bloody good CTA:

Prompt Vanessa to take the next step on her journey with clear calls to action. But, pleeeease make them fun, interesting and enticing. Oh, and in line with your TOV.

Because, no-one wants to be bored to death or confused AF about the next steps before trying to buy your goodies. #TrueAFStory

Tip No. 7: Don’t ignoring formatting:

Use headings, bullet points, and good-lookin’ visuals to enhance readability. Vanessa has limited time, so break down longer paragraphs into smaller chunks for easier digestion. Scannable headings are also awesome to move her through your copy and deeper into your website. Boom.

Tip No. 8: Don’t forget mobile users:

I can’t stress this loudly enough, but please - optimise your copy for mobile devices!!! Vanessa will usually view websites from her phone once the kids are tucked up in bed for the night, so if your website is too clunky to use, or not mobile friendly, she will click off your site quicker than you can say “No wait! Come back! I have chocolate!”

Tip No. 9: Make sure you proofread:

Whilst sometimes typos and grammatical errors can be hilarious… usually they just make you look a tad unprofesh. #BeenThereDoneThat. So proofread. Or hire a professional to do it for you. You’re welcome.

Tip No. 10: Focus on the benefits, babe:

Highlight how your product or service solves problems and hand on heart improves lives. Vanessa wants her pleasure points tapped via the benefits working with you will give her, and is not interested in a basic list of boring features. #BecauseWhoCaresAboutFeaturesJKIDo #WelcomeToSnoreFest2024
